Sighisoara
I was in a seemingly other world, when I, somewhat hastily - because I had forgotten the time-changeover completely - had gotten out from the train. It was completely quiet, without any hectic state.

In Sighisoara, horse-cars drove, not from two - only from one horse drawed, the cars had also no bench, the horses were powerful workhorses. The few cars on the way in Sighisoara, were altogether new, usually Dacia. And hardly I had crossed the first street, I already saw the first streetdogs.

The avenue which I went along afterwards was from a remarkable beauty. In Sighisoara it was quiet, very light, everything was clean, therefore a very friendly mood.

In Sighisoara I noticed immediately, and later even more frequently, that the houses were very often adapted for the businesses apparently. There was a lounge, known us rather as 'Espresso', a hairdresser, a doctor's office and a drugstore-market or parfumery - each of them accommodated in an one-family house.

The avenue was in a side-street, and although it was already end of october, it radiated a mediterane mood.

The hotel that I had found, was the only one in this small city. It had exactly one '*'. It was big! There were not many besides me. The corridors were long, that staircases broadly and considerably. It already had to have experienced busier times.

Gastronomy

I recommend to consume pizza in Sighisoara - for two reasons: firstly, there were no gastronomically alternation in Sighisoara and secondly, they tasted very good! And with a price of approximately EUR 2.50, for the doublesized EUR 5.00, they are a gift. A beer costs between EUR 0.25 and 0.90.

Sighisoara (Schäßburg)

Sighisoara has the biggest medieval ensemble of Romania.

The complex includes the entire old part of town and consists of some streets. After the city had extended over the original defense-installation, 14 defense-towers were originated in the time of the 14. - 16. century. Of those still exist 9.

The landmark of Sighisoara is named 'Stundturm', the other 8 towers carries names of different guilds which contributed to erect the defense-wall and towers.

Sighisoara
The old city centre of Sighisoara is on a small hill. Here near the castle, are also the 'Dracula-House'. Here spent Vlad Dracul, father of the notorious Vlad Tepes, 5 years in the exile before he became 1436 prince of the Walachia.

Sighisoara has 30.000 inhabitants today.

Sibiu (Hermannstadt)

The original capital of Transylvania got the freedom of the city in the year 1241. Sibiu
In the year 1483, the then pope lent Sibiu the title "defence rampart for all Christians". The reason was the not occupyable city-fortification which the attacks of the Turks hold out successfully.

The old part of Sibiu offers with its splendid citizen-houses, its twisty alleys, its gas lamps and - last but not least - with its fortifications a distinctive flair.

The extensive city-fortifications ware originated within 400 years.

  • The 1. ring-wall occurred at 1224 together with the defense-embankment.
  • The 2. ring-wall was erected approximately 1350. At this time was also originated the today still existing council-tower (Turnul Sfatului).
  • The 3. ring-wall was built in the time of 1326-1410.
  • Further was the 'Bastion Soldisch' originated in the years 1622-1627.
Of Sibiu would to be mentioned the Old City Hall and the world-famous Brukenthal-Museum with its art-collection and its library which includes over 200.000 books, pressures and documents.

Cluj-Napoca (Klausenburg)

Cluj is with 310.000 inhabitants a center of the Hungarians in Transylvania. Cluj is university city since 1580. Only in Ceausescu's era, Cluj got the epithets 'Napoca' in order to clarify the Romanian roots of Cluj.

Two churches dominate the old part of Cluj (Klausenburg):
On the one hand the gothic Church Michael, built almost 2 centuries long, is located on the Place Of Freedom in the center of the old part of town.
On the other hand the gothic Church of Reform with its prominent domes, built in the start of the 16. century, is located at the edge of the fortifications. Cluj
At the worth seeing National Theater of Romania are also performed operas.
